How to Determine Maximum Heart Rate

One of the important factors for our training is knowing our maximum heart rate. Unfortunately finding this number with formulas is not a good idea. You are endurance athletes and you need some special way to find it. You can’t guess maximum heart rate with a formula and build your training based on a guess. also, expensive watches can’t show the exact HRmax.

There are different practical ways to find maximum heart rate. One of the practical ways is:

Follow these steps continuously

HRmax can be reached after a complete recovery.

  1. A period of light running or riding.
  2. Intensive Run or Bike or … of 4 or 5 minutes (4 min or 5 min time trial)
  3. The last 20 to 30 seconds of an all-out sprint.
  4. HRmax can be read easily using an HR monitor.

Sports specific HRmax:

HRmax is different for sports. One athlete may reach an HRmax of 195 while running but 187 when cycling.
